Head restraints or Headrests as they became know as, optional head rests started being put in cars in the 1960’s. Those first headrests were pretty primitive, compared with todays ultra sleek ones. After Jan 1st 1969 they were mandatory for all cars. The main purpose is to lower the number of whiplashes that can occur in an accident. Also, something I just learned is the headrest is detachable and sharp. If you were in an accident you can break the window. Breaking a window from the inside is much easier than from the outside and if in an accident may just save your life.
