Can a car run with a bad Radiator? The answer is, unfortunately, no. If your Radiator is leaking Coolant, it's likely not going to be able to properly cool your Engine, which can lead to all sorts of problems.
The Radiator is one of the most vital component of your car's Cooling System, and its main purpose is to keep the Engine from overheating. It does this by circulating coolant through the Engine and carrying away the heat from the engine block. However, radiators can go bad for a number of reasons. Here are some of the most common culprits.
1. Lack of Regular Maintenance - Just like any other part of your car, the Radiator needs to be regularly maintained in order to function properly. This means Flushing out the old Coolant and refilling it with fresh coolant at least once a year. If you don't do this, the coolant can become stagnant and start to corrode the radiator from the inside out.
2. Leaks - Radiators can develop leaks over time, and these leaks can cause the Coolant level to drop below where it needs to be. A low coolant level can cause the engine to overheat, which will eventually lead to engine damage. Make sure to check your radiator for leaks on a regular basis and have any leaks repaired as soon as possible. 
3. Coolant type - Not all coolants are created equal, and using the wrong type of coolant in your radiator can cause it to fail prematurely. Always consult your car's owner's manual to find out what type of Coolant is best for your vehicle.
4. Overheating - Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the leading causes of radiator failure is overheating. This can happen if the Fan fails or if there is something blocking airflow through the radiator (such as a large bug or piece of debris). If your engine starts to overheat, pull over and turn off the engine as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
5. Another common reason for radiator failure is corrosion. Over time, the metal components of your radiator will start to corrode due to exposure to the coolant. This corrosion will eventually lead to holes forming in your radiator, causing it to leak coolant and overheat. To prevent this from happening, flush your radiator regularly and use only distilled water and antifreeze in your cooling system.
6. Scale buildup is another problem that can cause your Radiator to fail. When water mixes with antifreeze, it forms a scale that can build up on the inside of your radiator. This scale buildup can insulate your radiator, preventing it from dissipating heat properly. As a result, your engine will overheat and damage adjacent components like the heater core or thermostat. To prevent this from happening, flush your radiator regularly to remove any scale buildup.
A faulty Radiator can cause major problems for your car, so it's important to be aware of the signs that something might be wrong. If you notice any leaks, make sure to have them repaired immediately. In addition, be sure to check your coolant level regularly and flush out the old coolant at least once a year. By following these simple tips, you can help prolong the life of your radiator and avoid costly repairs down the road.
